He received a letter for his performance in Sanskrit, and later completed his B.A. with honors in Sanskrit from the College. He earned an M.A. in Comparative Philology from the University of Calcutta, where he was awarded a Gold Medal. In 1924, he received the Premchand Raychand Scholarship, and in 1926, the Moat Medal. From 1926 to 1931, he conducted original research and was awarded the Griffith Memorial Award three times and the Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee Medal twice by the University of Calcutta. He became a lecturer at the university in 1930, after serving as an honorary lecturer earlier. He completed his Ph.D. in 1937. He served as a Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Calcutta from 1954 to 1964, and was the Head of the Department of Linguistics in 1952. In 1963, he received the Rabindra Puraskar, and in 1981, the Vidyasagar Puraskar. Additionally, he received the Anand Puraskar, the Ramendra Sundar Smriti Award from the Bengal Literary Society, and the Sarojini Medal, among many others. Visva-Bharati conferred the title of 'Deshikottama' upon him, and Bardhaman University awarded him an honorary D.Litt.
