From 1941 to 1953, he constantly changed professions, ranging from private tutor to mechanic, porter to a restaurant waiter, trade union organizer to insurance agent, manager of a traveling dance troupe to land customs clearing clerk, proofreader to journalist, and many more varied professions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1975, he was arrested under MISA, the Maintenance of Internal Security Act, and was released a year later. In his relentless struggle to uphold journalists' rights and freedom of expression, he endured persecution, and for this reason, in 1976, he was the first to be awarded the Ko Jaye Yuk Memorial Award, dedicated to the founder-editor of South Korea's Dong-A Ilbo newspaper. Besides this, he received the Ananda Puraskar in 1970, the Magsaysay Award in 1981, and the Bankim Puraskar in 1982.
