जब–जब धर्म के नाम पर अधर्म का शासन आरम्भ होता है, जब जाति के नाम पर मनुष्य प्रेम की भाषा भूलने लगते है, तब ईश्वर स्वयं मनुष्यों के बीच अवतरित होते हैं। बाबासाहेब आम्बेडकर के बहुत पहले ही जाति–भेद की व्यवस्था और सामाजिक असमानता के विरुद्ध संघर्ष का शंखनाद कर चुके थे श्री श्री पूर्णब्रह्म हरिचाँद ठाकुर। उन्होंने स्पष्ट शब्दों में घोषणा की थी— “नराकारे भूमंडले, जतजन आछे, एक जाति बोले मान्य, पाबे मोर काछे।” हरिचाँद ठाकुर ने समस्त जीव-जगत और मानव समाज को यह अमोघ संदेश दिया कि—“जीवे दया नामे रुचि, मानुषेते निष्ठा, इहा छाड़ा आर जत, सब क्रिया भ्रष्टा।” लगभग सत्तर वर्ष बाद वही शाश्वत सत्य हम स्वामी विवेकानंद के वचनों में सुनते हैं— “जो जीवों से प्रेम करता है, वही ईश्वर की सच्ची सेवा करता है।” प्रेम और करुणा के इसी पथ पर चलने वाले मतवाले भक्तों को लेकर “मतुआ” समाज का उदय हुआ। इसी आलोकित मार्ग पर अग्रसर रहे उनके योग्य पुत्र श्री गुरুচाँद ठाकुर। अखिल भारत में सर्वशिक्षा आंदोलन के वे ही अग्रदूत बने। उनका स्पष्ट आह्वान था—“खाओ या न खाओ, उसमें कोई दुःख नहीं, लड़के–लड़कियों को शिक्षा दो— यही मेरी चाह है।” इसके बाद इसके बाद आया विभाजन का अभिशप्त काल। डॉ. स्यामा प्रसाद मुखर्जी के अधक संधर्ष से बंगाली हिंदुओं को अपना मातृभूमि स्वरुप पश्चिम बंगाल प्राप्त हुआ। उसी अंधकारमय हरणार्थ-कात की रात्रि में आशा के प्रहरी बनकर सामने आए शरणार्थी आंदोलन के जनक वैरिस्टर प्रमथरंजन ठाकुर। उन्होंने भारत की पहली निजी शरणार्थी कॉलोनी ठाकुरनगर की स्थापना की, जिसे संस्थागत रूप मिला “ठाकुर लैंड एंड इंडस्ट्रीज प्राइमेट लिमिटेड” के माध्यम से। शरणार्थी से गागरिक बनने की यह ऐतिहासिक लड़ाई उनके मृत्यू के बाद भी रुकी नहीं। इस संघर्ष की मशाल धामे रहीं बढ़ी माँ बीनापाणि देवी। आज CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT के माध्यम से वह दीर्घ संघर्ष अपनी ऐतिहासिक पूर्णता तक पहुँचा है। इसी समय चाला, इसी संघर्ष, इसी आत्मसम्मान और पुनरुत्थान की कथा इस पुस्तक के प्रत्येक पृष्ठ में सजीव होकर उभर आती है।

Whenever the rule of unrighteousness begins in the name of religion, whenever human beings begin to forget the language of love in the name of caste, God Himself descends among humanity. Long before Babasaheb Ambedkar, Shri Shri Purna Brahma Harichand Thakur had already sounded the call for a struggle against the caste system and social inequality. He had declared in clear words:

“In this human world, whoever exists, recognize all as one caste, and they shall attain me.”

Harichand Thakur gave all living beings and human society the profound message:

“Compassion for all living beings and devotion to humanity—apart from these, all other rituals and practices are meaningless.”

Nearly seventy years later, we hear the same eternal truth in the words of Swami Vivekananda:

“He who loves living beings truly serves God.”

The Matua community emerged through the devoted followers who walked this path of love and compassion. His worthy son, Shri Guruchand Thakur, continued to advance along this enlightened path. He became a pioneer of the movement for universal education across India. His clear call was:

“Whether you have enough to eat or not, there is no greater sorrow than that. Educate your boys and girls—that is my only desire.”

Then came the cursed period of Partition. Through the relentless struggle of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Bengali Hindus gained West Bengal as their homeland. In that dark night of displacement and suffering, Barrister Pramath Ranjan Thakur emerged as a beacon of hope and became one of the leading figures of the refugee movement.

He established Thakurnagar, regarded as India's first private refugee colony, which subsequently received an institutional structure through Thakur Land and Industries Private Limited. The historic struggle to transform refugees into citizens did not end with his death. Boro Ma Binapani Devi carried the torch of that struggle forward.

Today, through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), that long struggle has reached what the author describes as its historical culmination.

The story of this journey, this struggle, this self-respect, and this resurgence comes alive on every page of this book.
