Anandamath (1882) is a historical-political novel set against the backdrop of the Sannyasi Rebellion in late-18th-century Bengal, during a period of famine and political turmoil under the East India Company. The story follows Mahendra and Kalyani, whose lives are disrupted by famine and conflict, and introduces the revolutionary Sannyasi order led by figures such as Satyananda and Bhavananda.
The novel portrays the Sannyasis' struggle against oppressive rule and their dream of liberating the motherland. Its famous patriotic song “Vande Mataram” emerged from this novel and later became an important symbol of India's nationalist movement.
At its heart, the novel combines patriotism, sacrifice, political struggle, religion, and the idea of the motherland as a divine mother.
