Death Of Sarus Crane by Ambai [Paperback]

‘The real canvas of Sudha Gupta’s work is the murky depth of human behaviour. The Death of a Sarus Crane is not formulaic crime fiction. It is, instead, a study of the patterns and possibilities of crime in urban India.’—Scroll.in

Suspense, intrigue, and astute social commentary converge in these four detective stories by Sahitya Akademi award-winning Tamil author Ambai. Private eye Sudha Gupta, who is as unusual as she is unassuming, is on a mission to uncover Mumbai’s underbelly, where injustice and violence lurk in unexpected corners. Wherever the ace detective goes, whether to swanky apartments or humble chawls, she discovers new ideas and versions of Mumbai.

‘A Room Measuring 250 Square Feet’ tackles taboos and secrets, ‘The Death of a Sarus Crane’ explores privilege and tragedy, while ‘Sepal’ delves into forbidden love, and the poignant finale, ‘Bun, Maska and Irani Chai’, courageously redefines belonging and friendship.

Through each mystery, involving a complex interplay of people and social forces, Ambai’s narrative remains clear and effortless. Relying on a small entourage of friends, Sudha Gupta delivers a unique perspective on Mumbai that we overlook.
